Ben Alder

Since 1997, Ben’s career has been focused around land use, forestry, and natural resource management.  During his studies at The George Washington University he earned bachelors degrees in Environmental Science, Biology and completed course work for his Master of Arts in Environmental Resource Policy. 

During his time at GW, Ben lived and worked on Vancouver Island as part of a work study program focused on natural resource management in the Pacific Northwest.  After this experience he worked on Capitol Hill as a staff person for Ducks Unlimited, where he was engaged on a range of assignments to support DU’s mission of wetland and resource conservation.  Ben’s tenure with DU expanded to the field when DU’s Chesapeake Bay Initiative started in 1998. 

Having worked for more than seven years on natural resource management in the Chesapeake Region In 2005, Ben formed private company called Conservation Lands, Inc.  Together with his partners they worked to deliver land use management services focused on the delivery of conservation measures including conservation easements, Farm Bill Programs, as well other land and wildlife management practices.  Conservation Lands, Inc grew into a multi-state company delivering services from Pennsylvania to Georgia.  In 2010, the company was purchased by one of the partners and created the opportunity to focus fully on land brokerage.  His experience working with land use, agriculture, and wildlife conservation provides a unique platform for his land brokerage practice today.

Since selling his first 300-acre farm in 2004, Ben has worked to develop a real estate practice focused on land throughout the Delmarva Peninsula and is now licensed in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.  In 2011, Ben launched the SVN Land Group.  The SVN Land Group is a business unit within the SVN Miller Commercial Real Estate Company.

SVN Land Group works with private, corporate and institutional landowners and currently represents the largest non-govermental landowners in the region.  These clients include The Forestland Group, Lyme Timber, Perdue Farms, Allen Harrim Farms, Glatfelter Pulp and Paper and Algonquin Power.  Representing these clients has brought SVN Land Group much success and experience in all aspects of land both for agriculture and transitional uses like solar development. 

The foot print of SVN Land Group has grown rapidly in seven years and the team now represents more than 30,000 acres of land throughout the three state region.  Today, the team is comprised of 4 Advisors and is poised to grow in 2019 with additional advisors in Central and Western Maryland.  To date, Ben and SVN Land Group have sold over $143 Million dollars in land through the transfer of over 25,000 acres in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
